About the Department
Mattu University started the midwifery training program in 2012. The department has graduated 415 midwifery students since its inception in September 2012. Among these, it has graduated 42 BSc midwifery students in 2022. The Department aims to train midwifery students to meet the SDG program.
Generally, in 2023, the midwifery program currently has 357 BSc students: 259 with regular classes and 98 in the summer program, with 25 master’s midwifery instructors having different specializations and 2 BSc laboratory assistants. There are 12 MSc in Clinical Midwifery, 5 MSc in Maternity, 2 MSc in Maternity and Neonatology, 5 MPH in Reproductive Health, 1 MSc in Pediatrics, 1 MSc in Pediatrics, and 1 MPH in General Masters of Public Health. For 2023, the Department expects 68 BSc graduate students, including 24 Generic BSc students and 44 BSc post-basic Midwifery students.
Three hospitals and more than six health centers are available for clinical practice and team training programs in the catchment area of Mattu University. There are practical attachment opportunities in hospitals such as Mattu Karl Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Bedele General Hospital, and Shenen Gibe Hospital, as well as in health centers including Mattu Health Center, Gore Health Center, Horumu Health Center, Cora Health Center, Bedele Health Center, and Gachi Health Center.
The Midwifery department has one demonstration room for skilled development lap practice. The equipment for the demonstration room was procured and fulfilled by Mattu University. Skill Development Laboratory room separated for midwifery programs.
There are still many types of equipment that are needed for the skill development laboratory.
The Department plans to open an MSc in Clinical Midwifery to fulfill the health needs of the country and the Sustainable Development Goals.

To train competent midwives who can provide sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (SRMNCH) services at national and international levels and also undertake quality and problem-solving research, serving and engaging local, national, and global communities through its cherished and innovative Community-Based Education (CBE).
